Smelly Shower Drain – Plumbing Question 368

Question:

Bad odor comming from the shower drain, how do I eliminate the odors.

Answer:

Experiencing a smelly shower drain is not that unusual and there are measures you can take to remedy the problem. The shower drain should have a trap that holds a small amount of water, sealing off the sewer gasses and preventing them from entering your home. If the shower is used infrequently, the water can evaporate out of the trap and allow the sewer gasses into the home. The solution is to “prime” the drain periodically to ensure there is water in it.

If the shower is used frequently, yet the sewer gasses can be smelled often, the problem may be an improperly installed trap (or no trap), or a problem with the vent system. A clogged vent system will create negative pressure when water flows into it from other fixtures, siphoning the water out of the trap. Vent systems are most often blocked where they terminate, through the roof.
