Question:

The hot water in our bathtub will not stop running. We have tightened the bolts and have even tried turning the water off that runs to the bathroom, but it hasn’t helped. What can we try next?

Answer:

The cartridge/stem needs to be removed and replaced.  Hot water will continue to run due to thermal expansion.  You would have to shut off the water heater to shut the water flow off which means you wouldn’t have any hot water.  Shut off the main water, remove cartridge, turn water back on slowly to “blow” out debris from valve body, turn back off, install new cartridge, turn water back on, re-install handle/trim.
