My husband bought this warehouse last year – it is on sewage system. Recently there has been an awful odor from the bathroom and we have guessed it is coming from the toilet yet there is no backup, no problems draining, nor signs of leakage. What could this be?

Sounds like you may have a floor drain with a trap that has evaporated. Traps hold water to prevent sewer gas from entering our airspace. A lot of commercial buildings have floor drains which never get used and tend to dry out. Codes have changed the last few years and now require trap primers to drip water continuously to prevent this from happening.
