Question:

I don’t know if this is the “air hammer” situation or not, but I am hearing this loud, intermittent noise (coming from wall like pipes or something, so I think it is a plumbing issue).  It is kind of like someone has shower on upstairs (but no shower or water is turned on) and it is squealing and airy sound.  It just started today and it has been raining all day don’t know if that has anything to do with it.  It will go on for up to a minute or so then stop & start again.  It is driving me crazy and keeping me awake right now!  What is it and how do I fix it?  Please help!

Answer:

It sounds like you have a leak that is drawing air into your water pipes.  Have a plumber check out the system and he can install air hammer arrestors on the water lines to prevent this sound which will continue to get louder.
