Question:

How necessary is it to put teflon on the threads when putting in a new shower stem?

Answer:

You never put teflon tape on shower stems/cartridges. They always have a gasket that seats the stem/cartridge to the valve body. Pieces of teflon tape coming off are one of the leading causes of drippy faucets.
