Plumbing Question 188

Question:

When the plumber installed my garbage disposal, he used a 90 degree elbow to connect the water pipe and the pipe coming from the disposal. Evidently it was too short and the glue he used to connect it finally jarred loose after six months and I cannot get enough pressure under it to reconnect it. I bought an extender, but it’s the same size as the garbage disposal pipe and the water pipe (1 1/2″) and it won’t connect. How can I get an extender to connect the two? The disposal pipe has no threading on it, so I think I could use a slightly larger pipe to slip over it, but how can I find one that is 1 1/2″ on one end and slightly larger on the end? I am going crazy trying to figure this out! Please help!

Answer:

If your drains are installed using normal PVC slip joint couplings and p-trap, you should be able to find a common extension tailpiece at any hardware store such as ACE, Home Depot, Lowes etc.. It will slide over the drain outlet for the disposal arm and uses a compresion type nut to hold it in place, The other end will fit into the baffle tee or p-trap depending on how your disposal is installed.

If your entire drain is set up in ABS and glued in place, you may have to remove the piping under the sink and rebuild/reglue it back in place.
