Question:

Today a washcloth was flushed down the toilet, although the bowl drains slowly there is still a problem. I took a toilet snake and bent the open end of the coil to create a hook, hoping to snag it from the bowl. I went in about 18″ with no luck. I do not want to have to remove my bowl. All other drain operations in the house are OK.

Answer:

It would be better to use a closet auger which is designed for cleaning a toilet trap, (which is about 32 to 36 inches long). It is also better to pull the toilet before the rag is dislodged into the main sewer where it may cause more severe problems.
