What’s the worst that can happen if the ballcock completely breaks in the tank in a loft?

Answer:

The Ballcock or float is what shuts off the water to the tank when the water level reaches a certain height.  If the ball cock were to break or fail to work, the water would continue to run until it overflowed from the tank onto the floor.
