Plumbing Question 122

Question:

I am attempting to install a bathroom in building that has never had a commode, but has a sink in it. It also has city water/sewer coming to the building. I was told the sewer pipes were 2″ and that I need 4″ on the outside to properly install a commode to code. Is that so? I was also told that I would have to run that 4″ line all the way out to the main sewer line. This information was given to me by people who are not plumbers and I question their knowledge on the subject. I thought I would be able to tie into the existing line which is about 3 ft. out of the ground. Need professional advice.

Answer:

If you only have 2 bathrooms or less, you can use 3″ ABS for your main sewer line. Yes you can tie into the existing sewer line as long as you properly vent the toilet within 5 feet of the closet bend.
