How to Choose The Best Plumber

We have to admit that as much as we want to fix things on our own, there are just some things that we can’t. Sure, there are some plumbing fixes that are quite easy but what about plumbing problems on a much bigger scale? Something that requires years of experience and knowledge. Obviously, as much as we’d hate to part with our hard earned money, we just have to pick up the phone and cough it up. Believe me, there is no shame in that. In fact, if we hold on to our pride and try to fix something we don’t really have any idea about, we just might make matters worse than it already is.

So, let’s say you can’t fix the plumbing problem on your own, and you still need to call a plumber. How do you know that the plumber will do a good job? Well, for starters, if you’ve hired a plumber before and you know they do a good job, then by all means call them again. For those of us who have no idea who to call, here are a few things to look out for.

Is the Plumber Licensed?

Check the plumber for their license. Each state has their own criteria for training and licensing so make sure that the plumber you hire is licensed in your specific state. For example, in the state of California, you would run a search here: Contractors State License Board. When presented with the license, you should see the license number, expiration date and the jobs that the plumber is licensed to do.

Are they Trustworthy?

Do a little homework on the plumber that you’re planning to hire.  Check to see if the plumber is a BBB member.  Do they have complaints against them?  What grade do they have?  Remember – you can’t be too careful these days.  If the plumber has provided credentials and you still feel uncomfortable with them, you have the right to refuse their service.

What’s the Cost?

Pricing should be competitive. Shop around and ask for quotes. Before starting a job, the plumber should able to present you with a quote or an overall estimate on how much you’ll be spending, as well as the amount of time it will take to fix the problem. Remember that they are supposed to be professionals and transparency is something you should expect with any kind of service.

Are They Tidy?

Good plumbers know that maintaining the condition of the client’s home is important. It should stay that same way after they leave the house. That said, before they enter the house, they should put shoe coverings on before they enter and also have carpets ready where they can place their tools or equipments. This is a sign of respect for the homeowner which is what good plumbers have.

Ask Around

Nothing beats a referral. Sometimes we may not be as eagle-eyed as some of our friends or family. That is why it is always a plus to ask around for advice or suggestions as well as previous experiences with plumbers that they have tried before. Keep in mind that choosing the wrong plumber can lead to more plumbing problems, and also present dangerous situations if the plumber isn’t properly trained to handle certain tasks.

Certainly it is very important to choose the best amongst the rest. To fix any plumbing related problem, a plumber comes to home so it becomes very important to know whether he is a licensed and trustworthy fellow. One solution to this is to ask friends and neighbors about plumbers they have tried before. Thank you for making us aware of these points. Will be very helpful in the future when plumbing snafus arise.
